DDLJ’s matinee show at Maratha Mandir cancelled for the first time in 22 years
On Tuesday, the matinee show of the 90’s classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) at Maratha Mandir was cancelled for the first time in 22 years.
The iconic single screen theatre has been screening the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol-starrer DDLJ ever since its release in 1995. It has even gone on to create a record for screening the film for 1009 straight weeks.
However, the DDLJ screening was cancelled on Tuesday to accommodate the trailer screening of Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Haseena Parkar. Incidentally, it was also the first time the theatre was the venue for a movie trailer launch.
The film is a biopic on gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, who is also known as ‘Queen of Mumbai’. The Apoorva Lakhia directorial will hit the screens on August 18.
The executive director of Maratha Mandir Cinema, Manoj Desai, confirmed that the makers decided to launch the trailer at Maratha Mandir as Parker resided in Dongri, located a few minutes away from the theatre.
He stated that the decision was taken after consulting DDLJ’s producer Yash Raj Films. It was only after they agreed, that the makers of Haseena Parkar were given a go ahead.
With tickets costing between Rs 15 and 20, the matinee show of the Aditya Chopra directorial at Maratha Mandir usually has full occupancy, especially during weekends.
Although the owners of Maratha Mandir had decided to end the film’s historic run in February 2015, the public outcry forced them to continue the film’s matinee show for the sake of fans.
