Mother and teenage daughter commit suicide in Kamothe, depressed husband follows suit
A debt-ridden couple and their teenage daughter allegedly committed suicide at their rented house in Kamothe earlier this week. Their bodies were found on Sunday morning.
Indrajit Dutta (50), an engineer, his doctor wife Jasmine Patel (45) and their daughter Oshin (15), took the extreme step, a couple of days ago, a senior police official said. The family resided at Indra Vihar Residency in Kamothe.
The incident, however, came to light yesterday morning after their maid returned to work. The maid rang the doorbell several times, but when there was no response, she opened the door with a spare key.
Upon entering the flat, she found Indrajit’s body hanging from the ceiling fan in the living room. She immediately alerted the neighbours who subsequently informed the police.
According to preliminary investigation, the mother and daughter first committed suicide by hanging themselves in one of the bedrooms of the flat.
The officer added that when Indrajit, who was in an inebriated condition, saw the bodies of his wife and daughter hanging, he took them down, came to the living area and committed suicide.
The police found three suicide notes from the spot, purportedly written by each family member.
The suicide note reportedly penned by Jasmine said she had been ailing for long and had had lost interest in life, Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said. She also expressed her desire to donate her and her daughter’s body to KEM hospital.
In her note, the daughter said she was depressed due to her parent’s fights. She had even discontinued her studies after failing her SSC exam and due to the family’s financial constraints.
As per the suicide note, purportedly written by Indrajit, he found the bodies of his wife and daughter hanging and hence lost desire to live.
After losing his job a few years ago, the family had taken loans from many people and failed to repay them.
According to neighbours, the family did not socialise and rarely stepped out of their home.
Meanwhile, police have registered an Accidental Death Report, ruling out any foul play. They are also trying to trace family’s relatives to notify them about the incident.
