In a rare occurrence, several parts of Mumbai received light rainfall on Thursday evening and night, in line with the weather bureau’s earlier prediction.

Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Powai, Mulund, Dombivali, Malad, Oshiwara and Navi Mumbai were some of the areas that witnessed light showers today.

According to Skymet Weather, rains of light intensity begun due to the presence of a well-marked low-pressure area that continues to persist in the Arabian Sea off Karnataka Coast.

While clouding was persisting since early morning, the rainfall began later in the day. The presence of clouding, however, restricted the increase in temperature during the day.

The maximum temperature in Mumbai dipped below the 30-degree Celsius mark and settled at 29.4 degrees, a lot lower than the average levels recorded in the month of March.

While the sudden dip may be brought some respite to Mumbaikars, the relief is expected to be short-lived.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), meanwhile, has also predicted light rain and drizzle in the next 24 hours, with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around the 28 and 25 degree Celsius mark respectively.

The forecast for the next 48 hours also mentions the possibility of a cloudy sky and light rainfall. The maximum temperature, however, is expected to rise to 32 degrees.

The unseasonal rainfall can be attributed to the formation of a tropical depression over the Arabian Sea. The phenomenon, which is happening for the first time in March, is typically observed in the months of April and May.

The IMD had warned of light rainfall and drop in mercury levels in south Konkan region and most parts of Maharashtra earlier this week. Skymet too, had warned of ‘some clouding from March 15 followed by light rainfall activity‘ on Monday.
