T-shirt description helps Mankhurd police nab molester
With just a description of the t-shirt worn by the accused, Mankhurd police have solved a molestation case involving a minor and arrested a 21-year-old.
The incident took place June 25, when the 7-year-old had visited a public toilet. The accused, identified as Rahul Sawant, followed the victim. When he noticed that no one was around, he tried to take advantage of the situation and molested the minor.
Sawant had allegedly covered her mouth to silence her, but the girl bit his finger and cried for help. The accused, fearing a public beating, let her go and fled from the spot.
When the victim came home, she narrated the incident to her mother who approached Mankhurd police station and filed a complaint against the unidentified molester.
But the victim could not give the cops Sawant’s physical description. The only thing she recollected was that the accused was wearing a blue t-shirt with a print of Lord Krishna and Shivaji Maharaj.
“A week after the complaint was registered, we received a tipoff that a religious group had distributed similar t-shirts before their visit to Shirdi. After speaking with the head of the mandal, we got a list of everyone who received the t-shirt, including non-members. We called them all in and paraded them before the victim, when the victim managed to identify the molester,” said an official from Mankhurd police station.
Sawant has been booked for molestation under Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act. He will be in judicial custody till July 8.
