20 locals booked for pelting stones at cops, helping 3 criminals escape from Thane

Around 20 locals, both men and women, from Thane have been booked for attacking a police party that had gone to nab three criminals in Ulhasnagar on Friday afternoon.
The police had received a tip-off that the trio were present at their homes in Camp Number 2 area of Ulhasnagar, following which a team of police officers and constables arrived at the spot around 2 pm. The men were accused in a theft case in 2014.
According to Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar, as soon as the police team arrived at the spot, relatives of one of the accused and others allegedly pelted stones at them and manhandled them, allowing the accused to flee the spot.
Later, when additional force arrived, the locals who had disrupted the operation escaped the scene by traversing through the narrow lanes of the slum.
Around six policemen sustained minor injuries in the attack, Narkar said. Following which, around 20 persons, including four-five women, were booked in this connection.
The locals were booked by Ulhasnagar police under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 224 (obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of Criminal Law Amendment Act.
