The State Cabinet on Tuesday approved two big infrastructure projects in the city, the Metro 2B and Metro 4, that are estimated to cost over Rs 25,000 crore combined.

The cabinet, chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, cleared the projects.

The Metro 2B will connect the DN Nagar-Bandra-Mankhurd route while the Metro 4 will link Wadala-Mulund-Thane-Kasarvadavali.

According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to lay the foundation stone of the lines during his planned Mumbai visit in October. The Prime Minister was also invited for the bhoomi pujan of Metro 2A and Metro 7 in October last year.

While a major portion of the funds for the development of the projects will come from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and State Government, the remaining funds will be taken from a third-party investors.

Asian Development Bank (ADB), which had funded Metro 2A and Metro 7, and World Bank have both shown interest in funding the projects.

Currently, Metro 2A, 7 and 3 are under construction, while Metro 5 and 6 are still in planning phase. The State Government plans to develop a Metro network of 172 km in the city by 2021.

 

Metro 2B
