Over 3.2 lakh papers yet to be evaluated as Mumbai University fails to meet July 31 deadline

Even as the deadline for declaring the results ends today, the evaluation of only 90 percent of the 17 lakh plus answer sheets of the Mumbai University (MU) has been done till now.
Chancellor and Governor C Vidyasagar Rao had earlier set July 31 as the deadline for declaring results.
However, according to a statement issued by the MU late last night, over three lakh answer sheets were yet to be assessed.
“The Mumbai University has received the help of the universities of Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad and Kolhapur, and the speed of the work has accelerated. Of the total 17,36,145 answer sheets, 90 percent have been evaluated and 3,25,305 answer sheets will be evaluated soon,” it said.
The Mumbai University has declared 153 results (out of 477) in various streams. The results under various branches that have been announced are: Arts: 78, Technology: 48, Science: 10, Management: 10 and Commerce: 7, said the statement.
Except for commerce and law, most branches have reached between 90 percent and 98 percent completion of assessment, the communication said. A majority of the pending answer sheets, more than 2.64 lakh, are of commerce steam.
Earlier on Friday, the Maharashtra government had ordered an inquiry against Mumbai University’s Vice Chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh over his role in implementing the new online assessment system, which has resulted in delay in declaration of examination results.
Minister of State for Higher Education Ravindra Waikar had also told the Maharashtra Assembly that an inquiry will be initiated against Deshmukh about the manner in which the new assessment system was implemented.
State Education Minister Vinod Tawde said in the House last week that while the inquiry committee will probe into the entire matter, the task before the government at present is to announce the results of exams of final year courses.
To put pressure on the officials, the Mumbai Congress had earlier threatened to gherao the university campus if it does not declare results of all examinations by July 31.
The delay in declaring results will likely affect the academic calendar of post graduate courses. Many aspirants have also failed to secure admission in foreign universities after failing to send in their graduation results on time.
