Barely two weeks after the stampede, a 38-year-old female passenger was injured at Elphinstone Road railway station when part of a tile of a Foot Overbridge (FOB) fell on her on head while she was entering the station.

According to WR officials, the incident took place at the booking office end of the FOB around 3:30 pm on Friday. The passenger, identified as Anita Basak, was returning from the passport office with her son when she was injured by the falling tile.

The Chembur resident sustained a minor injury due to the mishap and was subsequently rushed to nearby KEM hospital by the on-duty Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Police Force (RPF) personnel.

Ravinder Bhakar, Chief PRO, Western Railway confirmed that Basak received two stitches on her head. An X-Ray and CT scan was also conducted at KEM, but the results did not show any complications.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered with the Mumbai Central Government Railway Police.

The FOB, incidentally, was the same which links the Elphinstone Road and Parel railway stations, on whose staircase 23 people had died in a stampede on September 29.

Following the tragedy, railways had done a preliminary review of the station’s infrastructure to identify any crucial and immediate threats. However, it failed to identify the FOB’s loosened tile.

A detailed safety audit of all suburban stations is also currently underway.
