Gas tanker overturns on Ghodbunder road: Route closed due to gas leak, traffic diverted
A gas tanker overturned near Fountain Hotel on Ghodbunder road in Thane on Thursday afternoon, forcing officials to close the road and divert traffic.
According to eye-witnesses, the driver lost control of the tanker at the turning next to Fountain Hotel on Ghodbunder Road near Varsava Bridge in Mira Bhayandar, causing it to overturn.
The incident took place around noon, following which police authorities and fire department were alerted. As of 3 pm, officials from police department, regional disaster management cell (RDMC) and fire brigade have reached the spot.
“The speeding tanker overturned near the Chena creek around noon, causing leakage of the gas from it,” Thane’s regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.
Although no casualties were reported in the mishap, the nearby area has been evacuated to prevent any mishaps due to the gas leak. Meanwhile, work on plugging the leak and clearing the area is underway.
Traffic police has closed both lanes in the interim and urged motorists to either delay their travel or use an alternate route. Vehicles already present on the spot have been pushed back.
Traffic Diversions (via Thane Rural Police):
1. Vehicles traveling from Mumbai to Gujarat via Kashimira are advised to take the Nashik Highway and turn from Bhiwandi.
2. Vehicles traveling from Thane Ghodbunder Road to Gujarat are advised to take the Nashik Highway and turn from Bhiwandi.
3. Vehicles traveling from Thane to Mumbai via Ghodbunder Road are advised to take the Mulund-Ghatkopar (LBS) road.
The road may remain shut for the next four hours, an official update from Thane city police has said. An official said the electricity of the nearby area might be cut off as a precautionary measure.
