The Marine and Preventive wing of Mumbai Customs busted a major smuggling racket in the city by arresting one accused and seizing thousands of electronic gadgets, watches, cell phone accessories and other items collectively worth over Rs 5 crore.

Acting on a tip-off, the Marine and Preventive wing led by assistant commissioner Deepak Pandit and his team reportedly intercepted a tempo en route Mumbai. It was being driven from Chennai.

During the inspection of the cartons inside the tempo, 10,000 expensive watches, 6,000 video cameras, 17,000 mobile scratch guards and other items were found. The goods are collectively worth over Rs 5 crore.

The officials are yet to ascertain if the watches are original or copies. The goods were imported from China to Chennai and being transported to Mumbai by road.

Meanwhile, one person has been detained in connection with the haul and is being questioned by officials to understand the scope of the racket. Further investigation into the case is underway.
