FYJC 2018: Declaration of 2nd merit list delayed, to be out on July 19

The second merit list will now be declared at 11 am on July 19

The office of the Deputy Director of Education (DyDE) will be announcing the second merit list for First Year Junior College (FYJC) 2018 aspirants on July 19 instead of July 16 following an intervention by the Nagpur bench of the High Court.

The second merit list was scheduled to be out today, July 16. However, the date was pushed back in lieu of the court’s ruling and the subsequent order by the government.

“As per the order of the Honourable High Court, Nagpur Bench on July 12 and accordingly Government order dated July 16, Round 2 merit list will be declared on July 19, 11 am,” a notification on the department’s admission portal said.

The court was hearing a writ petition filed by the management of junior colleges alleging that minority schools were not filling the 50 percent seats with minority students and surrendering them to attract applicants participating in the centralised admission process (CAP).

Minority institutions were expected to complete their quota admissions ahead of CAP and surrender vacant seats for students from the general category.

The bench of Justice ZA Haw and BP Dharmadhikari, in an order dated July 12, directed respondents to continue allotment of general category students to non-minority institutes for now. Once the process is over, students will be allotted seats in minority colleges on the basis of availability.

The delay in declaring the list was to reverse the surrendered list for each college individually.

“We have to reverse the surrendered, vacant seats and return it to the minority institutions. We have to do it individually for each college and hence the delay,” Suvarna Kharat, deputy secretary, school education department was quoted as saying.

Kharat also confirmed that students who have already secured admission will not be affected.

Meanwhile, several colleges like Mithibai, St. Andrews, Ruia, and Sathaye have reportedly released their second cut-off list.

Incidentally, the delay in the declaration of the second list is expected to further postpone the admission process.

The process has already been delayed once earlier when the dates for confirming admissions under the first round were extended by two days for Mumbai and Nagpur divisions in the wake of heavy rains.

The department had announced a revised schedule following the extension and is likely to announce yet another timetable taking into account the delay in declaring the second merit list.

Roughly 50,000 students confirmed seats in the first round, the merit list for which was declared on July 5.

Since most top colleges had limited seats left after the declaration of the first list, the cut-off percentages are expected to drop marginally for said colleges in the second list.
