Somaiya student dies after tragic accident, gives new life to 4

A 17-year-old student, who lost his life after a tragic railway accident last week, saved the lives of 4 others who were in dire need of organ donation.
Bhavesh Digge, a student of KJ Somaiya College in Vidyavihar, had gone to attend an International Yoga Day event event last Tuesday. While returning, he boarded a train from Wadala station.
At the subsequent stations, the train became even more overcrowded. In the chaos, Bhavesh, who was standing near the footboard, lost his grip and fell off the train between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations.
Bhavesh was rescued by railway police in minutes and rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. Doctors declared him ‘critical’ at the time of admission.
Since the hospital did not have an organ transplant or storage facility, it coordinated with the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) and got him shifted to Godrej Memorial hospital in Vikhroli.
After Bhavesh was declared brain-dead on Friday, the family decided not to let his death go in vain and donated his heart, kidneys, liver and corneas.
Bhavesh’s liver went to a 76-year-old man at Global hospital. One of his kidneys was given to a 42-year-old man at Godrej hospital and the other to a 29-year-old woman at Jaslok hospital. His corneas were sent to the eye bank.
His heart allowed Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital to carry out its first successful heart transplant. With this, Kokilaben became the second hospital in the city to have a heart transplant facility after Fortis in Mulund.
In 2016, 28 cadaver have been donated in the city, facilitating over 86 organ transplants.
