Mumbai’s central line comes to a halt due to excessive waterlogging, landslide

On Sunday, Mumbai’s Central line was brought to a halt after incessant rains caused multiple railway stations, including Thane, to get submerged in water.

The heavy downpour started during the wee hours of Sunday and continued till early morning, with some areas still receiving moderate to light rain.

Commuters complained of 20-30 minute delays on the Central line from around 9 am. However, by 12 pm, the delay rose to one hour. CR also cancelled the mega block of main line Matunga-Mulund slow line in the wake of the heavy rains.

The up and down services from Thane were affected because the tracks were completely submerged under water. Commuters either resorted to waiting in the trains or started walking towards the nearest stations. Other stations like Kurla, Bhandup, Kalwa, Mumbra etc were also submerged in water.

The heavy downpour also resulted in a landslide near Parsik Tunnel, which caused the track close to Diva station to get covered in mud. Railway workers are currently working on removing the mud and freeing the track.

From 12 pm, up and down locals were being diverted on fast line between Diva and Thane. However, the slow locals resumed services between Diva and Thane around 1:15 pm.

As of 1 pm, both up and down services on Central line are running late by an hour.

The weather department has also issued an alert, predicting torrential rains over the next 48 hours.
