2.4 km cycling track coming up at Carter Road, Bandra in November

Months after receiving a proposal from a local corporator, the civic body has finally given a go ahead for the creation of a dedicated cycling track at the Carter Road promenade on a trial basis. The track will come up in November.
In April, local corporator Asif Zakaria from the H-West ward had proposed the creation of a dedicated cycling lane on both sides of the promenade in keeping with the local’s demands and to promote a healthier lifestyle among residents.
Zakaria’s proposal had received a positive response from municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta.
Following which, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and traffic police agreed to make the track available for a period of one month on a trial basis. During the period, authorities will evaluate the impact on traffic and usage.
If the results are satisfactory, the 2.4 km track will be given a permanent approval. Any feedback from the residents pertaining to the track will also be incorporated.
During the trail period, the civic body will place curbstones to separate the cycling track from the main road. Alternate parking arrangements for two and four wheelers will also be put in place.
The plan for the track, presented by NGO Bandra Collective, entails the creation of 2.5-meter wide track on both sides from Otter’s Club to Café Coffee Day.
Bandra West Residents Association (BWRA), the citizen body responsible for maintaining the promenade, has also welcomed the move.
A similar track had been created at the Bandra-Kurla Complex a few years back, but it is not frequented by cyclists.
The traffic police has also received multiple complaints about vehicle owners parking their car over the cycling track, which defeats the purpose of creating a separate track.
