‘Dangal’ is officially the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time
Superstar Aamir Khan’s latest release, ‘Dangal’, has managed to break all the box office records to become the biggest grosser of Indian cinema.
The film, based on the life of Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita, beat lifetime collection of ‘PK’, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Sultan’.
‘PK’, with a collection Rs 340.8 crore at the box office, was the biggest film before ‘Dangal’. With this, the top two highest earning Bollywood films of all time have Aamir in the lead.
Interestingly, the first Bollywood film to cross Rs 200 crore mark was also Aamir starrer ‘3 Idiots’.
“I am absolutely overwhelmed with all the love that ‘Dangal’ has got. It is one of the most passionate responses I have ever received. I want to thank everyone for owning the film as their own.
“It’s the biggest compliment a creative person can receive. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And thank you Nitesh sir,” Aamir said in a statement.
The movie, released across 4000 screens in India, collected Rs 29.78 crore on day one. But positive reviews and advance weekend bookings helped the film cross the Rs 100 crore mark in three days.
‘Dangal’ has collected Rs 345.3 crore till Sunday (net India box office).
It has connected with audiences for its powerful portrayal of the tale of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former national champion who, much to the disapproval of his wife (Sakshi Tanwar) and his whole village, trained his daughters Geeta (Fatima Sana Sheikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) to wrestle.
The film collected an astounding Rs 14.33 cr on Sunday which is also the biggest 17th Day collection for any film.
