Mumbai to receive heavy rainfall this weekend, orange alert issued for Sunday

The south-west monsoon, which arrived in Maharashtra on Thursday, is set to reach Mumbai during the weekend and expected to result in heavy rainfall in the metropolis.

The conditions for the advancement of southwest monsoon into parts of the central Arabian Sea and into Maharashtra, including Mumbai, is likely to be completed within the next 48 hours, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

There is also a possibility of heavy rainfall over the west coast owing to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal with cyclonic circulation, which is likely to move northwest-wards.

The system is likely to result in scattered heavy to very heavy, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, over Konkan during the next two days.

According to The Weather Channel’s forecast, there is a 40 percent chance of rainfall over Mumbai on Friday and Saturday. However, by Sunday, the percentage will shoot to 80 percent and will remain beyond 90 percent during the first half of next week.

IMD had predicted heavy showers at isolated places across Mumbai on Saturday, and heavy to very heavy rain at a few places on Sunday.

As a result, an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain) has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts for Sunday.

Meanwhile, the weather department has predicted seasonal rainfall of 100 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA) in Maharashtra this year, implying a normal monsoon.
