Despite online leak ‘Udta Punjab’ flies high over the weekend
With the weekend box-office collection finally in, its safe to say Udta Punjab has done well for itself, both critically and commercially.
The movie, which grossed an estimated Rs 10.5 crore on its opening day, has gone on to collect Rs 33.80 crore in its first three days of release.
While one can argue that the numbers could have been higher considering the nation-wide publicity the film received thanks to the CBFC controversy, it’s online leak two days prior to release may have balanced it out.
Considering the fact that the movie was far from a typical masala entertainer, the ones which usually end up in the 100-crore club, the makers will be more than happy if it crosses around Rs 60 crore at the domestic box office.
The movie has also made its way to the top 5 openings of 2016, behind Housefull 3 (Rs 53.31 crore), Fan (Rs 52.35 crore), Airlift (Rs 44.3 crore) and Baaghi (Rs 38.58 crore).
The weekend numbers are also a ‘career best’ for the film’s lead actors Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh.
