2 workers crushed to death under collapsed plywood stack at Andheri godown
Two workers were killed, and three others injured, after a stack of plywood at a godown in Mumbai’s Andheri fell on them on Sunday evening.
According to cops, the incident took place around 6 pm at Shah Industrial Estate on Veera Desai Road, located near Yashraj Film studios, when the men were arranging plywood and sunmica sheets.
“Five men were working in the godown when the incident occurred. It seems the ramp they were using to unload the plywood stacks slipped and the stacks fell on the men. Two men, aged 25 and 30, were trapped under it,” an official from Andheri (West) fire station was quoted as saying.
Two bodies were recovered from the debris by locals and fire brigade officials. They were taken to Cooper Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. The men, Suraj (28) and Maqbool (27), were both residents of Andheri.
The injured workers were identified as Narad Shahani (21), Mohammad Tasilum (24) and Mahesh Gupta (32). All three are out of danger.
Officials from BMC’s K-West ward will inspect the godown today to ascertain if the owners had the necessary permissions and if the stacks of plywood fell because of negligence.
Police have registered a case of Accidental Death for now. However, an FIR will be registered if any negligence comes to the fore.
