A week after a drunk woman assaulted cops at Worli police station, another group of inebriated youngsters tried pulling a similar stunt in Dadar on Monday.
The incident occurred late Monday night when three youngsters, 19-year-old Shubham Gavde and two 17-year-olds, were harassing a local resident.
The trio were returning after attending a party at a friend’s place in Byculla when they decided to take a halt at Dadar. The group got down from their vehicle and started harassing the owner of a laundry shop, who had been sleeping outside on a bench. The shopkeeper was identified as Ramesh Kanojia.
A police patrol van, on their routine round, noticed the youngsters and decided to intervene. Assistant Sub-Inspector Vitthal Jagdale came to Kanojia’s rescue and tried to control the trio. However, the drunk youths retaliated by kicking and pushing Jagdale.
After pushing Jagdale, the youths tried to flee. But Jagdale and Police Sub-Inspector Amol Gavli chased them down and apprehended them. One minor even picked up a stone from the ground and threatened to throw it in the cop’s direction. But, he ended up breaking the rear window of the police patrol van instead.
The accused were taken to Dadar police station, following which they were taken to the hospital for a blood test.
Based on Jagdale’s complaint, the trio were booked under sections 323 (causing hurt), 332 (causing hurt to a public servant), 353 (assault of a public servant) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50) of the Indian Penal Code.
While Gavde has been sent to judicial custody, the minors have been sent to a juvenile remand home.
