The BMC has revoked the eating house license of four popular establishments in the city – including a club, a lounge and two eateries – that were found violating civic norms, especially ones pertaining to fire safety.

The establishments whose eating house licenses were revoked are We VIP in Andheri, Yeda Republic in Juhu, Silver Spoon in Andheri and Shalimar in Bandra. The civic body has also written to the excise department to cancel their alcohol licences.

According to a report in the Mumbai Mirror, We VIP and Yeda Republic had violated norms by illegally covering their terraces, Silver Spoon had made illegal alterations compromising safety and Shalimar was operating out of a building that was deemed unsafe.

The owners of Shalimar approached the court to challenge the revocation but failed to get any relief. Yeda Republic and We VIP, meanwhile, are said to be temporarily shut.

“They had become fire hazards and their permissions were not in place. When they refused to comply with repeated notices, we gave them a hearing and revoked their licences,” a senior civic official told the daily.

“Under the rooftop restaurant policy, terraces have to be kept open and can’t be covered at all. We had even carried out demolitions at these places but they had reconstructed the razed portions,” he added.

The stern action comes amid the recent crackdown on eateries flouting civic norms to prevent a repeat of last year’s tragedy in Kamala Mills, where the negligence of two pubs led to the death of 14 persons.

Last week, officials from BMC’s K-West ward had razed the illegal extensions of 11 pubs and restaurants at Andheri.

Independence Brewing Company, Space Bar, The Little Door, Rike Terrace Bar, Barbecue Nation, Kaledo, Brew Bot, Autumn, Glocal Junction, B- Desi and Beyond Bar were among those that were pulled up for violations.

Prior to that, officials had permanently cancelled the licenses of four restaurants in Bandra-Khar area for repeated violations. They were Zaffran on Hill Road, Sheesha Sky Lounge on Linking Road, 24 Lounge Bar and Argileh Rooftop Lounge in Khar West.
