CCTV captures school teacher running over 2 minors in Thane, arrested
A school teacher has been arrested for allegedly running over and injuring two minors with his car in Thane.
The incident took place around 3pm on Saturday, when the driver Dilip Gunjal was on his way to a housing society in Damani Estate in Navpada area of Thane. Incidentally, the victims resided in the same society.
Gunjal, driving a red-colored Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, allegedly hit the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the car to speed up and ram into the two minors.
The victims, Jia Kotak (6) and Parth Kotak (8), were rushed to Jupiter hospital in a serious condition. Both received fractures, head injuries and developed internal bleeding.
According to hospital authorities, Jia’s condition is still critical, while Parth is out of danger.
Gunjal tried to flee from the spot following the accident, but was apprehended by the security guards of a nearby jewellery shop, who witnessed the incident first-hand.
The shop’s CCTV also captured the entire incident, where the two kids can be seen crossing the road and being run over by Gunjal’s car.
The accused was handed over to Navpada police station by locals along with a copy of the CCTV footage on Saturday evening.
The 37-year-old teacher told cops that he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. He was subsequently booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act.
