Forced to fetch water from a well across the track, woman gets run over by train near Diva station
On Sunday, a 45-year-old woman lost her life after a passing train ran over her near Central Railway’s Diva station.
The deceased, identified as Sitarani Patwa, was a resident of RN Nagar in Diva (E). The residents of the area often source their daily quota of drinking and washing water from the community well across the tracks.
Like any other day, Patwa had gone to the well to fetch water for drinking and washing laundry. While she was crossing the railway tracks to return home, she failed to notice a Kalyan-CST local train and got run over.
Patwa was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
A kin of the deceased, while talking to TOI, said, “She had gone to wash clothes and get water for cooking as the family was expecting guests. There was no water in the house usually as the area faces water cuts for nearly four days and she had gone to fetch water from a well located in Diva east. She failed to notice the train and met with the mishap.”
According to reports, this is the second instance this year wherein a resident of the same area was run over by a train while they had gone to the well to fetch water.
