Major fires reported at Masjid, Girgaum, Kalyan & Mazgaon in last 24 hours
As city residents celebrated the festival of lights, multiple fire-related incidents were reported from across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Fortunately, no casualties were reported due to the mishaps.
While the incidents took place on Diwali day, so far only one incident has been attributed to firecrackers. Fire department is yet to issue a statement regarding the exact cause of fire in some cases.
Sai Niwas on P D’ Mello Road, Masjid
Where: Sai Niwas, a residential ground plus three storey building near Kaisar Hind hotel on P D’ Mello Road, Masjid.
When: The fire was reported around 3:40 pm.
How: Chief fire officer P Rahangdale stated that the fire originated on the first floor and was confined to electric wiring and other household items.
Casualties: The building’s residents were rescued from the building’s terrace. No one was injured.
Status: Eight fire engines and five water tankers were sent to contain the fire. Part of the building’s first floor was charred by fire.
Mehta Mansion near Dreamland Theatre, Girgaum
Where: Mehta Mansion, a four-storey commercial building near the Dreamland Theatre in south Mumbai’s Girgaum area.
When: The fire reportedly started around 8:15 pm.
How: The fire originated at an electric installation on the first floor of the Mehta Mansion and spread to the third floor of the commercial complex.
Casualties: Some people were present in the building at the time of the incident, but were safely evacuated. No casualties have been reported.
Status: 12 fire engines and six water tankers arrived at the spot and doused the fire. Building has suffered major fire damage.
Motor Garage near Khadakpada, Kalyan
Where: A motor garage located behind Sandip Hotel between Khadakpada & Chicken Ghar in Kalyan West.
When: The fire was reported around 9 pm.
How: According to preliminary information, the fire is believed to have been sparked due to firecrackers. The blaze spread across the garage due to the presence of oil and other flammable substances.
Casualties: No casualties have been reported as the garage was closed at the time of incident.
Status: 3 fire engines brought the fire under control. The garage, two cars and a storage unit were completely gutted in the fire.
Godown in Darukhana, Mazgaon
Where: Paint scrape godown located on Quay Street at Darukhana area in Mazgaon, Mumbai.
When: The fire was reported around midnight.
How: Fire officials suspect that the incident took place because of multiple cylinder blasts. However, a final confirmation is awaited.
Casualties: No casualties were reported as the premises was empty at the time.
Status: 8 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, but fire officials were unable to completely douse the fire by 4:30 am. The godown was completely gutted by fire.
