Mumbai’s dahi handi celebrations plagued with traffic violations, injuries, arrests
The Supreme Court order might have dampened the spirits of many, but Mumbaikars still celebrated Janmashtami with unparalleled zest and zeal yesterday.
But now that the celebrations have come to an end, here’s a summary of everything that transpired apart from ‘breaking the matki’.
# Over 3000 mandals organized dahi handi across the city, many of whom were backed by political parties.
# By 9 pm, 126 govindas were injured out of which 92 have been discharged from hospitals and 34 are still admitted. Update: By the end of the day, 159 were reported injured (last year over 350 were injured).
# No dahi handi related death was reported till the end of the day.
# 2 children, Sujal Ghadapkar (12) from Ulhasnagar and Dhiraj Male (9) from Kandivli, fell from the sixth tier of the pyramid and are currently battling for life.
# 282 traffic violations including 155 cases of helmetless riders, 126 cases of triple seat riders and one drunk driving case.
# 16 govinda pathaks booked for violating Supreme Court order under sections 308 (Attempt to Culpable Suicide), 336 (Endangering life/ Safety of others), 188 (Disobedience to order of Public Servant) of Indian Penal Code.
# MNS leader Avinash Jadhav arrested for organizing 49 ft dahi handi and flouting Supreme Court order under Section 140 of Bombay Police Act and sections 308, 336 and 188 of Indian Penal Code.
# One govinda lost his life in a non-dahi handi related incident. Swapnil Khobarekar (25) contacted a live wire while he was eating at Vakola, Santacruz and died due to electric shock.
