Senior MTNL official commits suicide at Powai lodge over alleged workplace harassment
A senior MTNL officer, allegedly fed up of workplace harassment, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of a lodge in Powai on Wednesday.
The deceased officer, Sanjeev Rajoriya (34), was the Additional Director General in the Department of Telecommunications and worked at the MTNL office in Sakinaka.
According to police, Rajoriya left his house in BSNL staff colony in Powai on Wednesday morning and informed his wife that he was going to file a complaint.
Instead, he booked a room in New Lake Palace Lodge online and checked into the hotel around 11:15 am. The 34-year-old subsequently called the reception and asked for cushion and towels to be sent to his room.
“When the hotel staff knocked on the door, no one answered. A few minutes later, the staff used the master key to enter the room and found Rajoriya hanging from the ceiling fan,” said Navinchandra Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone X.
He was immediately rushed to Rajawadi hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
While Rajoriya did not leave any suicide note, his wife Neelam submitted a written application to the police claiming that he was being constantly harassed by a few co-workers since the last few months.
“They threatened to kidnap me and my husband. Three weeks back, my husband broke down and revealed that his colleagues were harassing him. When my husband refused to do what they wanted, they tortured him,” she told Times of India.
Lata Shirsath of Powai police confirmed that police are probing the harassment angle. Meanwhile, a case of accidental death has been registered and cops have started questioning his friends and colleagues. His cell phone has also been seized.
