Suspected drunk driver injured in late night mishap near Sion Police Station
A tourist car driver, allegedly drunk, was injured in a late night mishap near Sion Police Station during the wee hours of Sunday.
The incident took place around 1:45 am, when the car was travelling from Sion to King’s Circle.
According to onlookers, the driver lost control of the vehicle on the stretch between Gandhi Market and MTNL office, which eventually caused it to hit the divider and turn turtle.
The tourist vehicle, a silver Maruti Suzuki Swift, overturned on the road leading towards King’s Circle flyover and on the opposite side of Sion Police station. It was not carrying any passengers.
Within minutes, around eight to ten police officials rushed to the spot. By that time, bystanders had already started evacuating the driver.
Since the front portion of the vehicle had given in, the driver sustained head injuries. He was subsequently rushed to Sion Hospital for treatment.
Nishant Agarwal, a biker who had stopped to help, told Local Press Co that he could smell alcohol on the driver.
A police official, who was also present at the scene, said that it was likely that the driver was in an inebriated condition but refused to give an official statement till the result of his medical test was out.
Details regarding the driver’s identity and his present condition are awaited.
Incidentally, the exact same spot when the accident took place has seen many such mishaps in the past, with at least three separate instances reported since April alone. The narrow road, with dividers on both sides, connects two flyovers and lacks speed breakers.
