Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar presented Olympic medallists P.V. Sindhu and Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar and badminton coach Pullela Gopichand BMW cars for their achievements at the Rio Olympics on Saturday.

India’s goodwill ambassador for the Rio Olympics, Tendulkar, handed over the keys of the luxury cars to the four sportspersons at a function held at the Gopichand Badminton Academy. Chamundeshwarnath, President of the Hyderabad District Badminton Association, gifted the BMWs.

Sachin took a selfie with the three women and Gopichand amid cheers by those present. Speaking on the occasion, Sachin asked them to continue their victorious performances and bring more laurels to the country. He was all praise for the medallists as well as Dipa and described Gopichand as the real hero.

“I am sure they will bring more medals for the country and continue to make India proud.”

Chamundeshwarnath, a former cricketer and businessman, had initially announced that he will gift a BMW to Sindhu but later decided to give it to the three others as well. Tendulkar is also a brand ambassador of BMW India.

Olympics silver medallist Sindhu (badminton) was gifted a red BMW 320d, while Sakshi, who won a bronze in the 58-kg (wrestling) category at Rio, was presented with a deep-blue new X1. Dipa, who narrowly missed the third place at women’s vault gymnastics, and Sindhu’s coach Gopichand got white BMW X1 and 320d respectively. The SUV X1 starts at Rs 30 lakh, while the luxury sedan 320d starts at upwards of Rs 37 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

On receiving the gift, Sindhu said, “Last time, when I received the first car – a Swift Dzire – from Sachin sir, he told me that he would present me with another car if I won a medal at Olympics. Today, my dream has come true.”

“Earlier, I was unknown to most people in India but today the whole of my country is with me. Surely, I’ll put my efforts get a gold in Tokyo,” said Sakshi.
