Veteran Indian actress Sridevi died due to accidental drowning in the bathtub of her hotel room and not because of cardiac arrest, reveals the autopsy report released by the Ministry of Health, UAE on Monday.

Sridevi was found unconscious in the bathroom of her room at Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel late on Saturday night and was declared dead by the doctors.

According to a Gulf News, a Dubai-based media publication, Sridevi, who was under the influence of alcohol, lost her balance and fell into the bathtub and drowned. The details of the forensic report, however, could not be independently verified.

The publication also reported that Dubai Police has given the forensic report to her family and Indian Consulate representative, and the actor’s body has been released for embalming. There is still uncertainty over when the body would arrive in Mumbai.

Indian officials and family members of Sridevi are awaiting necessary certificates from the Dubai authorities to start the process of repatriating her mortal remains.

“We need a forensic certificate, death certificate, and embalming certificate before the process of embalming the body begins. Unless these processes are completed, we will not be in a position to give a firm time for the repatriation of the body,” an official from the Consulate General of India told PTI.

The Padma Shri recipient was in Dubai to attend the marriage function of actress Sonam Kapoor’s cousin Mohit Marwah, along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi.

Born in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu on August 13, 1963, Sridevi began her career at the age of four in the devotional film “Thunaivan”.

The film marked the beginning of a journey that saw her work across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi productions, leading her to become one of the most formidable actresses of the 1980s and 1990s in Bollywood.

Sridevi is often touted as the only female “superstar” the industry has seen.

She is remembered for her performances in some of the iconic Bollywood films like “Mr. India”, “Nagina”, “Sadma”, “ChalBaaz”, “Chandni”, “Khuda Gawah”, among many others in different Indian languages.

Sridevi, who made a comeback to Bollywood in 2012 with “English Vinglish” after a long break of 15 years, was last seen in “Mom” in 2017.

Meanwhile, celebrities and fans have been flocking to the Mumbai residence of Anil Kapoor, brother-in-law to the actress.

Actress Madhuri Dixit, director Karan Johar, designer Manish Malhotra, actress Tabu, filmmaker Farah Khan, choreographer Saroj Khan, actor Farhan Akhtar, along with mother Honey Irani, were seen visiting the family earlier in the day.
