Veteran actor Om Puri passes away after heart attack, funeral in Mumbai today
Veteran actor Om Puri passed away following a massive heart attack early Friday morning. He was 66.
The news of his demise was confirmed by filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, a close friend of Puri. His body was taken to Cooper hospital for postmortem earlier today.
The funeral will take place at Oshiwara electric crematorium around 6 pm, confirmed actress Shabana Azmi, another close friend of the deceased actor.
Apart from being a successful Bollywood and theatre actor, Puri has also featured in number of Pakistani, British and Hollywood films.
A staunch supporter of art films, Puri’s repertoire of pathbreaking films include Bhavni Bhavai (1980), Sadgati (1981), Ardh Satya (1982) and Dharavi (1992), among others.
He has also been awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India.
The entire film fraternity and other influential figures, including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have taken to social media to express their grief over the actor’s demise.
