Three months after being expelled, the Marine Drive police have booked five Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) students for submitting fake caste certificates during the admission process.

The students have been identified as Shail Shah, Prerna Pardeshi, Parth Shah, Ronak Doshi and Dhawal Sanghavi.

According to an official from Marine Drive police station, the students were expelled from the collect in August after it found out that they had taken admission under reserved category by submitting fake Scheduled Tribe (ST) caste certificates.

However, the college sought permission from the Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University before filing a police complaint against them. The permission came through on November 24, according to a source.

The certificate racket came to light after the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) received an anonymous complaint, claiming 15 students from top management colleges had secured admission by providing a fake caste certificates.

An internal probe revealed that the allegations against all 15 students were true, following which they were expelled from the institutes. They were caught due to a mismatch between the registration number and district details printed on their certificates.

Apart from the five students from JBIMS, eight students of Sydenham Institute of Management Studies and two LN Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research Institute students were also expelled.

The management of Sydenham college had filed a complaint against their students at Marine Drive Police Station in August itself, following which they were booked under section 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery) and 468 (forgery with an intention of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
