Matunga station on Mumbai’s Central Railway (CR) network has made its way into the Limca Book of Records 2018 for having an all-woman staff. The station, last year, became the first in the country to be managed by all female staffers.

The idea for an all-woman station was first mooted by CR General Manager D.K Sharma and finally implemented in July 2017. Today the station is run exclusively by 41 women staffers, which include personnel from RPF, commercial and operating departments.

The staffers work under the supervision of station manager Mamta Kulkarni, who incidentally was the first woman assistant station master recruited on CR’s Mumbai Division in 1992.

“The staff has been handling round-the-clock operations of the station for the last six months and results are positive and encouraging. The idea is to create an environment where women are encouraged to take decision about their own personal and professional well being,” Chief PRO of CR Sunil Udasi said in the backdrop of the station achieving the rare feat.
