A Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable saved a seven-year-old boy who fell in the gap between the platform and the track at Naigaon railway station in Mumbai last week.

The entire incident was captured by the CCTV camera installed near the platform.

The incident took place around 9 pm on February 2 when the child, accompanied by his mother, tried to board the moving Churchgate-bound local from the station’s platform number 2.

While the mother managed to get in safely, the child was left hanging outside and fell as the train was leaving the platform. The boy faced imminent danger after falling on the platform.

Fortunately, constable Sunil Napa spotted the boy on time and rushed to help. Other passengers also joined in and managed to pull him to safety in the nick of time.

The mother, who was already on the train, got down at Bhayander station and took another train to return to Naigoan.

Western Railways, meanwhile, awarded Sunil Napa for his exemplary courage and humanity. Apart from the reward, Napa will also be presented with a certificate for his “sense of duty, presence of mind and quick action”.

WR also thanked other commuters who rushed to save the young boy’s life.

Around 75 lakh commuters travel via Mumbai’s suburban rail network every day, making the most crowded and unsafe means of transportation. According to Government Railway Police (GRP) data, more than 3,000 people died in train accidents in 2017 alone.
