Woman harassed at Carter Road amid protest demanding justice for rape victims
In a shocking incident, a woman was harassed by an alleged drunk man at Carter Road in Mumbai’s Bandra area on Sunday when thousands had gathered to demand justice for the victims in the Kathua and Unnao rape cases.
The incident took place around 8:15 pm yesterday when the woman was walking by the road where the protest was being held.
The woman, who wasn’t taking part in the protest herself, noticed that a man was following her for some time. The accused, who appeared drunk, passed lewd comments and tried to forcefully grab her, following which she raised an alarm.
In no time, bystanders rushed to her aid and caught hold of the miscreant. He was later handed over to cops, who had been policing the area.
The Bhiwandi resident, reportedly identified as Raju Yadav, was booked by Khar police under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced before a magistrate court today.
Last evening, thousands of Mumbaikars had come together to hold a silent protest to demand justice for the barbaric rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Kathua in Jammu & Kashmir, and sexual assault of another young girl in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh.
Many, including a number of prominent personalities, were seen holding placards and posters calling for swift action and harsh punishment in both cases. Some enraged protestors also raised slogans demanding death sentence for the perpetrators in order to set a precedent.
Apart from Mumbai, several such protests were held other cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam among others.
