Three youths, a bike rider and two pillion riders, lost their lives after crashing into a four-wheeler in Thane during the wee hours of Monday. The incident occurred near Saket Bridge in Thane West.
According to preliminary reports, the bike rider was allegedly speeding towards Majiwada when he rammed into a car ahead. The front part of the bike was completely damaged and the trio was thrown off the bike. There is a possibility that the rider was drunk at the time of accident.
Following the incident, the other car driver chose to flee the scene instead of informing the authorities. Because the driver fled the spot, cops might register a hit-n-run case.
The trio, identified as Prathamesh Tambat, Rupesh Jangan and Akash Jadhav, suffered severe injuries and were rushed to Thane Civil Hospital by the police. However, they succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
An official from Kapurbawadi police told a leading daily that all three were suspected to have consumed alcohol prior to the accident. Meanwhile, police are still on the lookout for the other vehicle.
On the eve of Independence Day, hundreds of bikers had taken to the streets of Thane for a ride. “Many of them were riding drunk and speeding. The main junctions were monitored by cops, so they mostly stuck to riding in the bylanes and other roads. In any case, there is no shortage of roads in Thane and it’s practically impossible for the police to station officers everywhere,” said Thane-resident Jayesh Medh, who was returning from a family dinner around midnight.
