Video: Multiple cylinder blasts lead to massive fire in Kapadia Nagar, Kurla
A massive fire broke out at a garage in Kapadia Nagar, Kurla during the wee hours of Friday, following multiple cylinder blasts.
The incident took place around 1 am in a makeshift garage located at CST Road near Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
Onlookers immediately alerted the fire department, post which 12 fire engines and 8 water tankers rushed to the spot.
According to Majid Hasan, a local, it took officials more than two hours to douse the flames.
“We heard two blasts back to back. After that, the fire went out of control. Hundreds of locals vacated the area and gathered on the adjoining footpath. Fire fighting was underway till after 3:30 am,” said Hasan.
Meanwhile, some women, children and elderly took shelter in the nearby mosque.
Chief fire officer, Prahlad Rahangdale, confirmed the news about cylinder blasts.
“There were LPG and OXY acetylene cylinders in the garages. There were total three explosions. We will investigate the matter further to ascertain more information about the incident,” Rahangdale told Mumbai Mirror.
Locals, on the contrary, reported hearing anywhere between three to nine explosions. A detailed report from the fire department is awaited.
At least one car, and some nearby slums, were gutted in the fire. However, no casualties were reported.
This is the second fire related mishap reported from the area this month. On January 7, a similar blaze had gutted a godown, scrap shop and a few others. The fire had been caused due to a short-circuit.
