TMC officials avert tragedy by evacuating 9 families from building that developed cracks
Quick action on the part of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officials possibly averted a major tragedy from befalling on members of nine families, who were evacuated after the building they were living in developed cracks and began to tilt.
According to a TMC official, all nine families were shifted from the five-story structure located in the old market area near Dadoji Konddev Stadium in Thane West.
TMC official Santosh Kadam said the building, Savera Apartments, was found to be in a dangerous condition.
The ground-plus-five building was tilting towards the nullah on one of its sides and had developed cracks.
Chief fire officer Shashikant Kale said the building would be sealed and water and power supply would be stopped immediately.
Anti-encroachment department officials would decide when to pull down the building, he added.
