Parel bridge partially shut for pipeline repair, brace for traffic snarls
Parel flyover was partially shut since Thursday morning
One side of the Parel TT flyover on Babasaheb Ambedkar Road had to be shut for traffic on Thursday after a pipeline burst at the start of the bridge led to flooding on the busy road near Krishna Nagar.
The south-bound lane of the flyover was shut since early morning after motorists informed traffic police about the leakage and the subsequent flooding. The civic authorities were alerted around 7 am.
The closure forced vehicles to travel under the flyover, an area that is overcrowded even when the flyover is functional. The excess vehicular movement led to major traffic snarls in the morning, with queues extending all the way till Dadar during peak hours.
To reduce congestion, traffic police diverted traffic via Wadala cross road and Naigaon cross road.
While civic officials started repair work immediately after the incident was reported, the work was not complete as of 5:15 pm. The engineers from BMC’s hydraulic department are yet to give an estimate about when the work will complete or what caused the rupture.
Despite the wastage, the leakage will not affect water supply to the neighbouring areas, confirmed Ashok Tawadia, chief engineer of BMC’s hydraulic department.
Motorists planning to travel via the route in the evening should brace for delays and opt for alternate routes. Meanwhile, Mumbai police also updated the diversions in place due to the ongoing repair work.

As of publishing this report, south-bound traffic queue has extended all the way from Hindmata flyover to Sion flyover.
UPDATE:
Mumbai police confirmed that the repair work is expected to last 48 hours, due to which south-bound traffic has been diverted via BA Road > left turn at MTNL office > Char Rasta > R.A Kidwai Road towards CST.
