3 held for selling ‘fake’ vehicle insurance policies

Mumbai Police have arrested three persons who were allegedly involved in selling fake insurance policies and driving licenses to unsuspecting motorists.
According to officials, the trio had sold bogus policies to at least 800 people over the last two years.
Their modus operandi involved obtaining details of vehicle insurance policies and calling motorists whose policies were about to expire. They would provide more competetive rates and door-to-door service to seal the deal.
Police started probing the case after receiving a tip off about their firm, One Point Solutions General Insurance, selling bogus policies. After investigating the case, they raided the company’s office in Lower Parel on Monday night.
During the raid, cops recovered over 300 duplicate policies of firms like Bajaj Allied Insurance, ICICI Lombard Insurance, Bharati Axa Redefining General Insurance, Reliance General Insurance among others.
Several duplicate licenses, stamps, papers, and other electronic gadgets were also seized. Following the raid, the firm’s supervisor, Gajanan Patil, was arrested.
During questioning, the 28-year-old disclosed the details of the other two people involved in the racket. The firm’s CEO Prashant Sutar (25) and general manager Inayat Abdul Bedrekar (31) were both subsequently nabbed and arrested from Belgaum, Karnataka.
Sutar had reportedly worked with a few insurance companies earlier. His experience came in handy while acquiring customer data and executing the scam.
All three have been booked for cheating and forgery by N M Joshi Marg police station.
