Light showers were reported across Mumbai on Wednesday morning, a day after IMD announced the onset of south-west monsoon in Maharashtra.
Mumbaikars will have to brace for more rainfall as the monsoon is expected to gain strength, with a forecast of widespread rainfall in Goa and Konkan including Mumbai, for four days till June 29.
Earlier in the morning, areas in Central Mumbai and Suburbs received some precipitation.
“We are observing the cloud pattern so that we can predict the possible downpour. The forecast for the next four days, till June 29 is of widespread rainfall in Goa and Konkan including Mumbai,” an IMD official said.
The Madhya Maharashtra region would receive some showers while other areas may have some dry days ahead, he said.
Marathwada and Vidarbha regions share similar forecast of scattered showers till June 29 which also means that the farming community, as well as drinking water supply schemes in this region, would have to wait longer to get sufficient rains to meet their needs.
The monsoon, which generally arrives in Mumbai on June 10 every year, is behind schedule by more than two weeks, which is the longest such delay in the last ten years.
Private weather agency Skymet has also forecast scattered rains of light to moderate intensity on June 26 (Wednesday) and moderate showers with a few heavy to very heavy spells between June 27 and 28.
“Thus, between June 26 and 30, over 200 mm of rains are likely to be seen over Mumbai. However, these showers will not be torrential and heavy in nature, which may disrupt the daily life of people. Nevertheless, water logging in some areas with localized flooding cannot be ruled out during this episode of Monsoon rains,” Skymet said.
