Monsoon revives in Mumbai, several areas witness rainfall in excess of 100 mm

After a week-long dry spell, monsoon revived with full force in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, disrupting normal life on Wednesday.

According to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster Control, since midnight till 7 am today, the city recorded 171.0 mm rain and suburbs notched 58.2 mm rain.

Meanwhile, several areas like Colaba, Worli, King’s Circle, Mahim, and Wadala witnessed rainfall in excess of 100 mm from midnight, said private weather forecasting agency, Skymet.

Heavy rain continued to lash Mumbai since 1 am and the city woke up to water-logging in many low-lying areas, flooded railway tracks and huge traffic snarls.

Office-goers and students alike were hit due to crawling traffic, besides suburban trains running late by 15-25 minutes on the Western Railway and Central Railway.

“Suburban train services are running on all four corridors of Central Railway. However, there is a delay of 10 to 15 minutes on the mainline between Kurla and Sion, due to waterlogging in low lying areas of this section,” an official said.

Important roads in areas like Parel, Dadar, Wadala, Kurla, Sion, Tilak Nagar, Andheri, Santacruz, Khar, Goregaon, Malad, Dahisar, and other pockets were flooded seriously hampering traffic flow and pedestrian movement, leading to traffic diversions.

The poor visibility on the roads also led to the collision of three cars in the Andheri in the wee hours of Wednesday, leaving eight injured. Flight movements from Mumbai Airport were also hampered as visibility dropped to 300 metres.

The rainfall comes a day after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri stating that a cyclonic circulation would bring more rain showers to the city in the next two days.
