Country’s first bullet train will travel 21 km under sea

The ambitious first bullet train project of the country between Mumbai-Ahmedabad will include a 21 km stretch that will be submerged in the sea near Thane creek.
In a technical committee meeting between senior officials from Indian Railways and Japan held earlier this week, modal qualities like track design, bridges, tunnels, etc. of the bullet corridor were discussed. The 508 km long track will mostly be elevated, however, a 21 km long stretch after Thane creek towards Virar will be submerged underwater.
About 81 per cent funding for the Rs 97,636 crore project will come from a loan from Japan. Railway is expected to close the loan negotiations by end of this year.
The first bullet train of the country is expected to cover a distance of 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours at a maximum speed of 350 kmph.
The work is expected to begin in 2018 and is likely to get completed by 2023.
