Update: 6 killed under a 100-year-old building that collapsed in SoBo
Six people lost their lives while two others sustained serious injuries after a 100-year-old building collapsed in Kamathipura in South Mumbai yesterday afternoon around 2 pm.
Gulmahal, the three-storey building, which was located on Lane no 14 of Kamathipura, had wooden staircase and beams, and had been vacated by several residents because of the on-going repair work.
The labourers had their lunch and were about to start the work when the building collapsed. Locals rushed to help and informed the fire brigade and the BMC disaster control room. After a few hours of struggle, they managed to take the victims out from the debris.
Four of the injured were declared dead before admission and two died during treatment.
The dead also included a paanwala, whose shop was located on the ground floor, and an unidentified woman.
The casualties could have been higher if a ground-floor beer bar was open.
According to agencies, Vibrators were used for excavation of the road which may have caused the collapse. However police have started probing the incident and have meanwhile registered a case of accidental death.
