A 10-year-old boy drowned at Marve beach in Mumbai on Sunday during Chhath Puja while the 19-year-old who tried to rescue him is feared dead.

The incident took place around 6 am when Ajay Chauhan (10), who was accompanying his family for the Puja, slipped and fell into the water.

On seeing him, Mukul Shah (19), who was also there with his family, jumped into the sea to rescue him. However, he reportedly slipped on the rocks and fell into the sea.

After the Mumbai Fire Brigade was alerted about the mishap, officials from the fire brigade and Navy arrived at the spot and started looking for the two missing boys.

The search operations continued till late Sunday night, by which time Chauhan’s body was found by lifeguards.

However, Shah is yet to be found and efforts to trace him are underway as of Monday morning. Police fear Shah might have been drowned as well.

Meanwhile, a case of accidental death has been registered.

Both Chauhan and Shah were residents of Pathanwadi in Malad (East).
