Injured tortoise found in Thane lake, rescued
An injured tortoise was found in Kachrali Lake in front of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) office in Thane on Monday morning.
According to officials, the tortoise was likely injured after being hit by the rocks during high tide.
The reptile was found opposite the TMC headquarters in Panchpakhadi, Thane (West) and rescued by Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) officials around 8 am today.
The tortoise, an Indian soft-shell turtle weighing around 39.5-kilogram, was later taken to the veterinary hospital in Brahmand for further medical assistance.
The recent spell of heavy rains in the state has taken a toll on animals, many of whom have been devoid of both food and shelter.
In a related case, a young male dog was brutally beaten by the watchman of a Worli building at the behest of one of its residents when it tried to take shelter in the building. The dog is now battling for his life.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered against the watchman and resident.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over Maharashtra today. Further, strong winds, speed reaching 40-50 kmph, are also likely to prevail over the entire state.
