MNS stops ongoing Metro, Coastal Road work; wants State to resolve BEST crisis first
In a bizarre protest, members of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) forced workers to halt Metro and Coastal Road construction work on Monday in lieu of the ongoing BEST bus strike.
A team of MNS activists visited the Metro-3 site at Chira Bazaar and Coastal Road sites at Worli and Priyadarshini Park earlier today and forced workers to stop the ongoing work.
According to MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande, the party has taken up the cause of BEST workers, who have gone on strike to press for various demands. Over 30,000 BEST employees have been on strike since the last seven days.
Deshpande alleged that the state government was more keen on splurging crores on building new infrastructure like Metro and Coastal Road while ignoring existing public transport.
The government is giving step-motherly treatment to the cash-strapped BEST and its employees which are a key part of the city’s infrastructure, he said.
He asserted that the BEST workers were facing a financial crisis due to the administration’s mismanagement, adding that MNS has only stopped work till 3 pm when the high court verdict is expected.
Work on all three sites has resumed as of publishing this report.
