Official documents in Marathi only: Shiv Sena MLA tears list with English names
An MLA of the ruling Shiv Sena on Monday tore an official list on the grounds that the names in it were written in English instead of Marathi.
According to reports, the incident took place yesterday when Dilip Lande, the Shiv Sena MLA from Chandivali, was attending a meeting in the M-West ward. The deputy commissioner of BMC and other civic officials were also present in the meeting.
During the discussion on Andheri-Kurla road widening work, a list of home and shop owners on the road was presented to him by ward officials.
When the list was handed over to Lande, he tore it claiming that the names in it were written in English.
The MLA then asked officials why the list was not made in Marathi when there was a rule to use the Marathi language for daily functioning. He subsequently threw the torn papers towards officials.
Lande reportedly stated that BMC officials were insulting the language even as Sena President and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was trying to get classical language status for Marathi.
Following the incident, ward officials assured Lande that a new list with names in Marathi would soon be presented to him.
