1 dead, 4 injured as luxury bus overturns on JVLR near IIT-Bombay in Powai
A luxury bus overturned on Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) near Powai on Saturday afternoon resulting in the death of one of the passenger and leaving 14 others injured.
The incident took place between 1 and 2 pm on JVLR near IIT-Bombay, ahead of Gandhinagar flyover, in Powai. The bus was travelling towards Powai.
According to preliminary information, the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, causing the bus to ram into the divider and overturn. The bus, belonging to Destiny Travels (MH-o4-G-9017), was carrying around 35 passengers.
While bystanders were trying to rescue of passengers, the traffic police, an ambulance and a fire engine arrived on the spot.
One of the passengers, identified as Imtiaz Shaikh, was partially stuck under the bus and died in the mishap. At least 14 other passengers suffered injuries and were rushed to Rajawadi and Powai hospitals.
The remaining passengers were evacuated safely.
The traffic police had to partially close one lane on the highway till the passengers were moved out. The lane closure led to major traffic snarls till about 3:30 pm.
However as of writing this, a crane has straightened the bus and the traffic situation on the road from LBS to Powai has normalized.
Update: According to Parkside Police, the bus had been booked by a group that was on its way to attend a wedding in Mumbra from Malad. The driver of the bus, Sanoj Nishad, fled following the incident and has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act.
Changes: The number of injured passengers and the fact that the deceased was a passenger and not the driver has been altered based on new information. The article also mentioned that the traffic from Powai to Vikhroli had been affected, which was incorrect and has been changed accordingly.
