15 students pursuing MBA from top city colleges were expelled after the a probe revealed that they had submitted fake caste certificates to secure admission under the Scheduled Caste/Tribe (SC/ST) quota.

The expelled students, who are accused of forging fake caste certificates, have been identified as:

# Expelled from Sydenham Institute of Management Studies & Research Education, Churchgate: Rahul Kankaria, Miti Shah, Shaaj Hamid Ansari, Chintaman Shah, Chirag Shah, Jinal Dalal, Manar Lakdawala and Manasvi Daga.

# Expelled from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Churchgate: Shail Shah, Parth Shah, Ronak Doshi, Dhawal Sanghavi and Prerna Pardeshi.

# The identities of two students who were expelled from L.N Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, Matunga have been withheld following a pending verification with the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).

The certificate racket came to light after the DTE received an anonymous complaint, claiming that the above 15 students had secured admission by providing a fake caste certificates. An internal probe revealed that the allegations against all 15 students were true, following which they were expelled from the institutes.

“We are now worried that the 15 expelled students might just have been the one’s who were unlucky to get caught. There might be many more who might have ‘gamed’ the admission process by securing admission with the help of fake certificates,” said a senior official with the DTE.

According to one report, the seats have now been allocated to other deserving candidates.

After the DTE alerted Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, the college filed a complaint against the students at Marine Drive Police Station. Post which, the management was contacted by a man threatening to take action if the college did not take back the complaint.

However, Marine Drive police has nabbed the caller, identified as Ibrahim Morani, and is currently trying to ascertain his involvement with the case. It is suspected that he may be related to an expelled student or a part of the certificate racket.

Meanwhile, the expelled students have been booked under section 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery) and 468 (forgery with an intention of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.

Earlier this month, the same number of MBBS students were expelled from medical colleges across Mumbai, following the exposure of the medical admission scam by a retired Mantralaya employee. In the previous case too, students had resorted to making fake caste certificates and secured admission under SC/ST quota.
