On Tuesday morning, a trailer rammed into an Eastern Freeway pillar on BPT road in Sewri.
The incident happened around 5:30 am when the driver lost control of the trailer and dashed into the pillar. The front cabin, where the driver and other passengers are housed, was completely destroyed upon impact.
Fire brigade officials reached the spot around 6:20 am and managed to rescue one person safely.
Two others, who were rushed to J.J hospital, have been declared dead.
Further details are awaited.
Update: The deceased have been identified as Sandeep Yadav (25) and Vishal Rajbhar (19). Both worked as cleaners.
Update: Officials from Sewree police station suspect that the accident was a result of the driver falling asleep at the wheel. After he woke up, he applied immediate brake to avoid hitting the trailer, but the heavy rods pushed the truck forward and collided with the pillar.
Update: The driver, Narendrakumar Yadav, was rushed to the hospital and arrested after getting discharged. He has been booked under Sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
