Biker rams into pedestrian, gets run over by taxi at Marine Lines
A biker and a pedestrian were killed in a road accident involving a bike and a taxi at Marine Lines on Tuesday night. The incident happened around 9 pm on M K Road near Chandanwadi crematorium.
The biker, 22-year-old Dinesh Choudhary, lost control of his bike and rammed into the pedestrian who was crossing the road. The pedestrian was identified as 57-year-old Chandrakant Kanakekar.
After crashing into the Kanakekar, Choudhary fell from his bike and landed on the opposite side of the divider. At the exact time, a taxi driver was driving along the first lane. The driver, Sambhaji Tiwari, had little time to react and ended up running over the biker.
Both Kanakekar and Choudhary were rushed to the hospital by onlookers immediately after the accident.
Choudhary was rushed to Saifee Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. Kanakekar, who had sustained severe injuries, was rushed to G.T hospital and succumbed to injuries on Wednesday. Choudhary was a resident of Lower Parel and Kanakekar resided in Kandivali.
The L.T Marg police station booked the taxi driver, Tiwari, under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him after the accident. However, he was released on bail the following day.
Over the last decade years, India has seen a steep rise in road accidents. According to a report on road accidents in India, released by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, 2015 witnessed over 5 lakh accidents and claimed over 1.4 lakh lives.
